The Inauguration Gowns that Never Were

Posted in fashion illustration by high Priestess on February 4, 2009

Though relatively nubile designer Jason Wu won the honor of having First Lady Michelle Obama wear his work on inauguration night, many designers were clamoring for dress the emerging style icon.

Have a look at some of the best (and best known) designers that Mrs. Obama had to choose from.

This is Why They Call It “Award Season”

Posted in Award shows, celebrities by high Priestess on February 3, 2009

Freida Pinto Being a movie star must be so exhausting this time of year. If you’re an actress with a successful role you must need to have about 30 dress on deck to accomodate the seemingly back to back awards and luncheons and whatnot.

Pictured: Stunning “Slumdog Millionaire” actress, Freida Pinto wearing a golden goddess mini.

Now we all know about the Oscars, and the Grammys and even the SAG Awards. But the Directors Guild of America Awards is not one that you’ll often see on your favorite pop culture “news” rags. Still, the event drew out some of the season’s most in demand. It’s clear they’re saving their best for the Oscars, but one or two still mustered up some high style for the occasion.

Jennifer Hudson (and her Outfit) a Hit at Super Bowl XLII

Jennifer Hudson at Superbowl XLIII

Singer and Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson’s star was certainly shining yesterday at Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa, FL. Despite being with months of the tragic deaths of her mother, brother, and nephew, Jennifer gave an amazing performance of the national anthem before the game. And she looked fantastic doing it. Her look was chic and celeb worthy, but still casual enough not to look ridiculous on the football field. The girl has come a LONG way from American Idol.

Kudos, Miss Hudson!

Fashion in Art: Ray Caesar

Posted in art by high Priestess on February 2, 2009

“I was born in London, England on October 26 1958, the youngest of four and much to my parent’s surprise, I was born a dog. This unfortunate turn of events was soon accepted within my family and was never again mentioned in the presence of polite company.”

So begins the Website bio of artist Ray Caesar, whose work is an incredibly dark adventure into high style surrealism.

“Unfortunately the drawing continued to become somewhat atypical and aberrant and it was not long before it was impressed upon me that such images might not be suitable for public viewing.” Not sure if this is more cheekiness here, but from what I’ve seen in his art, it may very well be true. Caesar seems to have a fixation on dangerously young and painfully pale female subjects, of whom you’ll see more than a few upskirt angles.

But possible pedophilia aside (goodness, we hope it’s not so), we are enamored by Caesar’s exquisite depiction of fashion and interior style. The vibrant blue jacket in “Suddenly” below is amazing to behold – like you could reach out and touch the silk taffeta.

Balenciaga leather platform sandals

This spring there’s the usual range of fuddy (no thanks), fabulous (yes, please!), and fantastic (nice, but how the hell do you where it). Platforms are making a major play and you’ll see copious amounts of color blocking and bejeweled pumps, as well.

Negro is the New Black

Colored Girls Rule!

Colored Girls Rule!

*Gasp!!!* Did she say colored? Yes, ladies and gentles, I did. I also said “negro” – which isn’t so maligned a term, but still has a rather stale ring to it. But before you get your PC panties in a bunch, note that by “colored” I was referring to the dresses… mostly.

The composite photo seen above was clipped from, an Web shopping portal for fashionistas with pockets deep enough to buy looks straight from the runway. It’s certainly true that these vibrant colors are especially beautiful against golden brown skin and perhaps that’s why there an unusually high ratio of black models in this collage. Still, I can’t help but wonder if black girls aren’t somewhat of a fashion fetish at the moment.

Keyshia Cole Covers Vibe’s First Ever Style Issue… Hmmm

Posted in celebrities, magazines, music by high Priestess on January 30, 2009

Vibe March 2009 Style Issue, Keyshia Cole cover Now.. I don’t want to take anything away from Miss Cole. She’s a great music artist with a fantastic voice. Hell, I’m not even into R&B, but I’ve still found myself rocking to her music. But, uh, how in the hell did this chick end up on the cover of a “style” issue?

Who wants to bet those 31 “most stylish stars” are actually simply the celebs with the best publicity teams?

She looks very pretty on this cover (which is, itself, beautifully styled), but this girl is far from being a style icon. I just don’t know. Maybe they are setting her up for a fabulous makeover? Have a look at some previous publicity shots and you’ll see what I mean:

I don’t care for the makeup on these models. With the exception of the black girl, they all look three days dead. However, I did love the impressive range shown in this collection. It has a rugged by optimistic future feel to it. We love.
